A few words

Ramin Yamal (Barcelona), the "18-year-old supernova" who is called the best talent since Lionel Messi (Inter Miami), emphasized that he would pioneer his own path, not the "second Messi."

"I respect Messi. I know what kind of player Messi was and what he is like now," Yamal said on CBS' "60 Minutes" on Sunday. "I don't want to be Messi, and he wouldn't want me to be the next Messi either. I want to go my own way."

Yamal, who turned 18 in July, was the youngest ever to be selected as the "2025 FIFPRO Best 11" and was recognized for his ability at this year's Ballon d'Or by ranking second after Usman Dembele (Paris Saint-Germain).

For this reason, Yamal has often been called the "second Messi" compared to Barcelona's "legend" Messi.

However, Yamal was determined to walk on his own path.

When asked to be compared to Messi in an interview with 60 Minutes, Yamal said, "I knew such a question would come up," adding, "Messi is the best player in history. If we meet at a stadium someday, we will respect each other."

He said, "I want to go my way. "I don't want to play like Messi," he said. "Messi and I respect each other."

Yamal was noted for his dribbling ability, but explained that he was proud of his passing ability.

"I didn't dribble a lot when I was young. I scored a lot of goals, but I liked the way I saw the whole game," Yamal said. "When I was young, I felt Messi had a unique pass. He made the same pass as a goal. I focused on that part, too."

Yamal is looking forward to the 2026 North American World Cup as he has yet to face Messi on the ground.

Both Argentina, Messi's homeland, and Spain, where Yamal was born, have advanced to the finals.

"It's been a long time since Spain has been considered a strong favorite. The whole country is looking forward to it, and I have high expectations as well," Yamal said. "I'm in good physical condition. I can win the World Cup."
