Newcastle United sign new sponsor for Premier League return

Championship winners replace Wonga with gaming firm Fun88.

Championship title winners Newcastle United have announced Fun88 as their new shirt sponsor ahead of their return to the Premier League next season.

The online gaming company’s logo will feature on the English club’s playing shirt for the next three years, while the brand will also have a prominent presence around St James’ Park stadium and across United’s digital channels.

Financial terms of the agreement, which sees Fun88 replace Wonga as the Magpies’ main sponsor, have not been released.

The new deal with Fun88 was revealed as Newcastle unveiled their new Puma-made strip on Monday, ahead of their 125th anniversary next season. Following the agreement – and in recognition of the Premier League’s burgeoning Asian following – the club plans to establish new profiles on the WeChat, Weibo and Dongqiudi social media platforms.

“It was important for us to find the right partner and in Fun88, we have a shirt sponsor that understands the club and brings significant benefits commercially,” Lee Charnley, Newcastle’s managing director, said in a statement.

“The relationship will enable the club and Fun88 to enhance our respective global profiles together as we celebrate a landmark season and embark on the exciting Premier League campaign ahead.”

Having been relegated from the Premier League in 2009, Newcastle secured their return to the top tier of English soccer last month before clinching the Championship title ahead of the also-promoted Brighton & Hove Albion on the final day of the season.
